Let’s minimize our dust in Kampala!
Do we know the definition of dust?
Dust: very very tiny, solid particles, scattered in the air
In our cities, there are 2 main dust originating factors we have: vehicles and construction activities.
Let’s start with vehicles.
For most of their history, vehicles around the world burned petrol, emitting dangerous amounts of exhaust into the air we breathed. However, we know the vehicle industry is transforming.
Day by day, electric vehicles become popular. They reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Now, let’s focus on the second dust culprit: construction.
Construction is growing more rapidly than ever in our fair city, which is fantastic for the economy. However, we must also be responsible with this rapid growth.
A simple way to be responsible in construction is to reduce the activities which cause a lot of dust, because it affects our health.
Construction
Part – 1 : Dust cause by construction
Construction activities produce large amounts of dust and pollutant gases. They also reduce visibility and degrade overall air quality in the surrounding area.
Not only do these activities affect human health; they spoil biodiversity.
How can we reduce the construction pollution?
• Use water sprays and sprinklers,
• Cover with green net around the building.
Part – 2 : Long After Construction: Dust in the home.
Poor air quality at home can cause health problems such as; respiratory diseases, coughs, wheezing etc.
How can we reduce the dust at home?
• Use Doormats outside the front door to wipe soil from your feet before entering
• Minimize the use of rugs and carpets: they collect and trap all dust that sneaks into your home.
• Try to avoid using louvers in windows and doors
• Create air ducts which vacuum the indoor air.
